Biodynamic Silvoarable Vegetable Production
In the vicinity of Den Bosch (NL), the biodynamic vegetable farm Tuinderij de Guit is located. The farmers have been growing healthy, organic vegetables and some fruits for more than 20 years and deliver vegetable and fruit boxes to about 200 clients. With the changing climate and more weather extremes, the annual production system is facing difficulties. Annual crops by themselves are more vulnerable, demand compost import and are more easily threatened by disturbed insect populations.
This has led them to work with The Forest Farmers to transform their 2 hectare market garden into a more resilient, diverse, productive and healthy farming system based on regenerative agroforestry. Our clients vision is to create a protected and favourable microclimate for the vegetables, improve soil life and biomass production, offer habitat and food for wildlife while at the same time increase overall production through multiple layers and improved growing conditions as well as invest in the constantly increasing value of permanent tree crops. The horticultural field has been equipped with alleys of small and half stem fruit trees, berries and biomass trees as well as other wildlife supporting species in winter 2018/19. Below the trees a dense herbaceous layer of nutrient accumulating and beneficial herbs has been established in spring 2019.
